Our design friend, Erin The Caterpillar to Butterfly, architecturally known as Friendly Wall v004, is a joyful playsculpture that breaks out into gamified, functional objects and components. It demonstrates how design can be used as a tool to ignite people - including adults! - to play, and in doing so guides people to connect, communicate, and collaborate. Border Blitz: Artistas del Cómic de Tijuana

Border Blitz at Comic-Con Museum is an exhibition, held in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate in San Diego, that shows the work of three contemporary comic art artists in Tijuana. Charles Glaubitz, Alejandra Yépiz Portillo, and Urbano Mata represent three generations of artists, with a very personal language and imagery, who have found in comics a means of expression and in Tijuana and the border, a space for creation, evolution, and artistic experimentation. From the rich retro-futurist mythology of Glaubitz, to the endearing adventure stories of Yépiz, through the notes and landscapes of Mata, Border Blitz is a reflection and projection of the high contrasts that are experienced in Tijuana as a border city of the XXI century.

Material Witness

Material Witness showcases four borderlands artists who experiment with environmental factors, such as light and water to document their surroundings using craft processes. From Luciano Pimienta’s raw clay sculptures that erode overtime to Hiromi Takizawa’s ghostly glass impressions of collected rainwater, the featured artists harness the unique properties of clay, glass, wood, and metal to capture provocative moments in their material’s lifetime. This exhibition calls for further interrogation of humanity’s impact on the environment. As time moves forward, the works will continue to change, encouraging new observations.

Architect Frank W Stevenson: Designer of the border California/Baja California region in 1920-1940.

Master Architect Frank W. Stevenson designed buildings in San Diego, Tijuana, and Ensenada during the period 1920-40 that are architecturally significant. Architectural historians will lead a full-day tour departing from Chicano Park in San Diego, highlighting Stevenson 's work in Tijuana and Ensenada. Similar landmarks not designed by Stevenson will be visited. This event will be part of the Latinos in Heritage Conservation conference to be held in San Diego.

“Remote Pulse” by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

The mezzanine at ICA San Diego’s Central campus will become the site of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s celebrated interactive installation, Remote Pulse (2019). Working in collaboration with the Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT), we invite visitors to participate in a cross-border activation. These pulse-sensing stations allow visitors at both ICA / Central in San Diego’s Balboa Park and CECUT in Tijuana to feel the pulse of a visitor in the partner location.

My Intimate Partner

This multi-media art exhibition examines the intersection between intimacy, power and control that leads to Intimate Partner Violence (Domestic Violence). Through an artistic and transformative prism, the exhibition broadens the perception of intimate partner violence beyond a women’s issue into the social landscape that may shape such violence and explores the visitors’ own relationship to power and control. The museum experience explores the positive aspect of surviving along with raising awareness and promoting action towards eliminating Intimate Partner Violence.
