Our design friend, Erin The Caterpillar to Butterfly, architecturally known as Friendly Wall v004, is a joyful playsculpture that breaks out into gamified, functional objects and components. Exhibition : Poetic Justice’s Voices on the Inside

Voices on the Inside is an art exhibition by incarcerated members of Poetic Justice in San Diego & Tijuana, and chosen by the SD Public Library as their featured exhibit at the Central Branch from April-July, 2024. “Voices” aims to be a space for uniting our community around the systemic challenges faced by people in women’s jails and prisons- before, during, and after their incarceration. The justice system requires urgent, engaged, community-based action to amend punitive approaches to incarceration as well as community-based healing for harm reduction. Art and dialogue are critical to justice in the Border Region.

Here & There / Aquí y Allá – Design Residency

Here & There / Aquí y Allá is a designer-led initiative that hosts events and an annual residency program to forge lasting relationships within the creative communities of San Diego and Tijuana. Through a residency in San Diego, Gael Guerrero, Tijuana-based founder and creative director of architecture and design studio Fragmento, will share his practice through CAPAS - LAYERS, an exhibition opening on May 11, 2024 at Bread & Salt. The residency will be followed by a Tijuana residency in September hosting a designer from San Diego, creating an ongoing dialogue across borders — both geographical and between disciplines.

Material Witness

Material Witness showcases four borderlands artists who experiment with environmental factors, such as light and water to document their surroundings using craft processes. From Luciano Pimienta’s raw clay sculptures that erode overtime to Hiromi Takizawa’s ghostly glass impressions of collected rainwater, the featured artists harness the unique properties of clay, glass, wood, and metal to capture provocative moments in their material’s lifetime. This exhibition calls for further interrogation of humanity’s impact on the environment. As time moves forward, the works will continue to change, encouraging new observations.

Master Architect Frank W. Stevenson designed buildings in San Diego, Tijuana, and Ensenada during the period 1920-40 that are architecturally significant. Norman Foster: Architecture of Light and Space

This exhibition celebrates the work of the globally acclaimed architect in anticipation of the Museum’s collaboration with Foster + Partners for the extension and renovation of the Museum’s west-wing, due to break ground in tandem with the Museum’s centennial in 2026. Lord Norman Foster (British, b. 1935), has dedicated his life’s work to blending architecture with its natural environment and creating progressive structures that integrate holistically with their historical contexts.

Discovering Nature at Balboa Park’s Botanical Building and Gardens

The newly rejuvenated exterior gardens of the Balboa Park Botanical Building and Gardens will soon be the setting for a variety of public programs focused on connecting people to nature. Serving K12 students, families, and young adult audiences, Forever Balboa Park will offer volunteer-led tours, public programs, focused field trips, and youth internships providing an insider glimpse into the ways in which innovative design choices permeate this landmark public space. Ongoing programming, launches in November of 2024.

The WDC Convocation Ceremony is a symbolic event highlighting the official “handover” of the WDC title from WDC San Diego Tijuana 2024 to the next host city. This event is a celebration that includes city officials, World Design Organization leadership, community stakeholders, media, political leadership and WDC 2026 planning team. The ceremony provides WDO with the opportunity to recognize those who contributed to the success of WDC San Diego Tijuana 2024 and share the preliminary findings of the Impact Study.
