In this episode, Bennett and Lilia Peji, a dynamic design duo whose work is deeply rooted in community and culture. With family in Manila and Tijuana, and now residing in San Diego, their creative journey reflects the unique blend of perspectives shaped by living on the border.
Bennett, a graphic designer with 40 years of experience, and Lilia, an architect and designer, share their insights on how design connects communities, tells stories, and celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of the Tijuana San Diego region.
One of their most meaningful projects was a collaboration for the Convoy neighborhood sign in San Diego, with their daughter, Nicolette Peji, who designed the typography inspired by noodles—a staple across Asian cultures. Each letter features unique colors and patterns, representing the diversity within the community. The letters are vertically stacked, reflecting traditional Asian writing systems, and carefully balanced, symbolizing harmony and connection. This family collaboration not only brought identity and pride to the community but also showcased how design can celebrate cultural diversity in a powerful and visual way.
World Design Spotlight is a series of over a dozen videos which celebrate the innovative minds redefining design across our region.
