Jorge Gracia

In this episode of Spotlight, we explore the impact of architectural design through the perspective of Jorge Gracia, architect and founder of the Escuela Libre de Arquitectura in Tijuana.

From the beginning, Jorge was inspired by urban spaces in Europe, contrasting them with the car-centric planning of his hometown. This experience motivated him to envision a more human-centered Tijuana, designed for its locals.

Throughout his career, Jorge has developed residential projects, wineries, restaurants, and urban developments, always focusing on how architecture can evoke emotions and create a true social impact. His philosophy is reflected in in his studio Gracia Studio and the Escuela Libre de Arquitectura, founded in 2014, where students design and build projects with a purpose: to transform the city in a sustainable and meaningful way.

One standout project is the restructuring and transformation of Avenida Revolución, an initiative to reclaim public space for pedestrians, turning this iconic street into a linear plaza that fosters identity, economic growth, and community connection.

Jorge Gracia views the San Diego Tijuana region as a creative hub that drives cultural innovation. Through initiatives like World Design Capital, Jorge envisions a future full of opportunities for design in Mexico, where binational collaboration opens new paths and projects.
