Exchange Pavilion (Temporary Art Installation or Structure)

Exchange Pavilion (Temporary Art Installation or Structure)

World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 (“WDC 2024”), in collaboration with The City of San Diego, is creating a temporary art installation or structure known as the “Exchange Pavilion”. This Pavilion will serve as both a physical representation and a hallmark for place-making throughout WDC 2024. It presents a unique opportunity to showcase the vision for the future of design in our cross-border region and symbolize San Diego and Tijuana’s designation as the first cross-border World Design Capital in 2024.

The selected team to create the design of our WDC 2024 Pavilion is Heleo Architecture and Design Studio and Daniel Ruanova Design Studio. The pavilion will be installed in Tijuana by May 2024 and relocated to San Diego in July 2024.

Exchange Pavilion (Temporary Art Installation or Structure)
the Exchange pavilion

The “Exchange Pavilion” is created as a radical structure designed not just as an architectural statement, but as a catalyst for meaningful connections and cultural understanding. More than a physical entity, the Exchange Pavilion becomes a bridge, connecting people from various backgrounds, inspiring conversations, and fostering a sense of unity. It is a testament to the power of design in cultivating equity, and weaving public spaces into the collective and shared urban memory of these two cities that transcends borders. Bringing together democratic materials, the dynamic shape serves as a canvas for thought provoking imagery, real-time interactive language displays, artistic light installations, and as a public space for gatherings that invite visitors to explore, learn and engage. As the Pavilion comes to life in San Diego and in Tijuana, it invites us all to immerse ourselves in its physical and conceptual presence, contribute to its public memory and coexist with others who arrived along their way. EXCHANGE/INTERCAMBIO becomes, not just the crossroads, but the destination as well. A new space that provokes dialogue, creativity, human interconnection and the exchange of our collective experiences, an embodiment of World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024.
