Every World Design Capital has the opportunity to create a structure to be utilized during the designation year as an activated space and representation of design in the region. Representing the unique cultural and creative synergy between San Diego and Tijuana, the EXCHANGE Pavilion was conceived through WDC 2024’s invitation to designers, artists, architects, and creative teams from San Diego and Tijuana to submit proposals. Heleo Architecture + Design and Daniel Ruanova Studio were selected to bring this vision to life.
Activities at the EXCHANGE Pavilion included 60+ talks, presentations, pop-up exhibits, and installations from community partners on both sides of the border.
From August to November 2024, the EXCHANGE Pavilion hosted a vibrant series of activities, including talks, presentations, pop-up exhibits, and installations organized in collaboration with community partners from both sides of the border.
These events celebrated the region’s diverse cultural perspectives, placing a strong emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion while honoring the legacies and contributions of the communities that shape the San Diego Tijuana region.
Key cultural groups and organizations participated in the Pavilion’s programming, creating opportunities for engagement and connection across borders. Visitors were invited to explore interactive exhibits, attend thought-provoking presentations, and engage with installations that highlighted shared histories and creative achievements.
By serving as a hub for cross-border collaboration, the EXCHANGE Pavilion inspired dialogue, strengthened relationships, and showcased the power of cultural expression in fostering unity and understanding in this dynamic region.</span>
The EXCHANGE Pavilion was made possible in partnership with the City of San Diego, and funding for the pavilion was made possible by the City of San Diego.
