On October 31, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the World Design Capital’s Exchange Pavilion in Balboa Park will host the U.S. activation of the Callejon Río Bravo, a Cultural Alleyway in Tijuana. The activation of the Callejon on both sides of the border is part of the World Design Capital’s catalog of Impact Projects in 2024.
Callejon events at the Pavilion, located in the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park, will offer a day full of family-friendly activities, including art exhibitions, dance performances, and Mexican folklore, in an environment that demonstrates the Callejon’s dedication to environmental protection. Attendees will enjoy a fun and educational experience, designed for all ages, featuring participation from various institutions such as the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development of Baja California, Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in the UK, Xochicalco University in Tijuana, and the ocean rescue organization Wild Coast, among others.
“Public spaces are typically used as platforms for leisure, sometimes for exercise, but rarely as cultural spaces with educational intentions. We want Tijuana residents to have a dignified space that they can take pride in, just as the city deserves” comments Adrián Eliel Gamboa, director of CZ Green A.C.
The Callejon Río Bravo, located in the Revolución neighborhood of Tijuana, is a public space that was rescued during the pandemic thanks to the collaboration of enthusiastic young people, neighbors, and local businesses. It is currently being transformed into a cultural center that hosts artists from various disciplines, as well as organizations dedicated to environmental protection and improving quality of life. This year, the Callejon project was selected by World Design Capital San Diego – Tijuana, becoming part of its prestigious catalog of urban impact projects.
