“The Imaginary Amazon” is a group exhibition of art, design, and material culture exploring representations of the Amazon Rainforest region. In addition to painting, sculpture, photography, and video art, it also features a diverse array graphic design including photo-books, travelogues, historical and contemporary botanical illustrations, and replicas of midcentury travel and movie posters, postcards, and colonial-era maps. “The Imaginary Amazon” explores what images of the Amazon region reveal about the cultures and hegemonies of their creators. It addresses themes including visual culture, design, ecology, cartography, botany, imperialism, Indigenous perspectives, and the nature of representation itself.
