Symbiotic Borders is an immersive and interactive art project that explores perceptible divisions while creating a community across geographical divisions. Featuring two interconnected installations in San Diego and Tijuana, the project utilizes real-time data from participants, such as brainwaves, body movement, and heart rhythms, to create synchronized audiovisual experiences. The goal is to establish shared spaces that transcend physical borders, promoting unity and appreciation of diversity. Through personalized audiovisual journeys, participants on both sides of the border engage with shared narratives and form meaningful connections that bridge cultural and regional divides.
Bio
Engineer Mario D. Alvarado (MDAP) explores hybrid projects that combine experimental practices with biofeedback sensors, musical composition, and audiovisual performance. Through various software algorithms and biofeedback sensors, he utilizes the human body and its biological processes (brainwaves, heart rate, breathing, and body movement) to create audiovisual pieces, inviting users to explore themselves as composers and creators, offering experiences in sound therapy and psychomotor exploration. MDAP has exhibited globally, notably at the International Contemporary Art Festival of León, Los Angeles Design Festival, Tijuana Design Week, Mutek México Festival, Pavilion 0/4 “Beyond Code and Time” at Mediations Biennale in Venice, Italy, and the finalist event of World Design Capital at Rady Shell in Jacobs Park, San Diego.
