About

Pavilion

The Symbiotic Border project comprises two interconnected, real-time interactive installations situated in San Diego and Tijuana respectively. These installations harness human body data such as brainwaves, body movement, and heart rhythm to generate synchronized audiovisual experiences on each side of the border.

Located at Cine Observatorio in Tijuana and the Exchange Pavilion in San Diego, these installations facilitate bidirectional interactivity between two users. Participants can engage with each other through a VPN network, transmitting only OSC data for instantaneous interaction. Each installation features motion sensors, heart rate monitors, EEG devices, and sculptural displays that visualize generative art based on participant data. Two audio monitors per installation sonify the biofeedback data, enriching the immersive experience.

Our vision for Symbiotic Border is to create shared spaces that transcend physical barriers, fostering unity and appreciation for diversity between San Diego and Tijuana. The multisensory design challenges geographical boundaries, prompting deep reflections on regional identity while reshaping perceptions of borders. Participants can choose to utilize all sensors or opt for motion tracking alone, enhancing accessibility without compromising the interactive experience.

Through personalized audio and visual journeys, users on both sides of the border embark on a exploration of interconnectedness and shared experiences. This innovative setup not only facilitates real-time communication but also cultivates meaningful connections that bridge cultural divides.
