Did you know that there are 47,000 immigrant children in the Tijuana Public schools, and 46,000 of those are American citizens whose parents have been deported? Did you know that there are thousands of Mexican students who cross the border every day to attend school in the US? This event will bring together designers and practitioners from both sides of the border to explore the challenges facing the next generation of elementary schools: schools that need to not only become the heart of their communities but respond to the new realities of cross-border migration, cultural discovery, and climate change.

The House of Wise Words is a resource-starved bilingual school that teaches both in Spanish and Mixtec, the language of the indigenous Mexicans from the south who have come north in search of work and better opportunities for their children. Since 2021, a diverse coalition of design firms and civic partners from both sides of the San Diego-Tijuana border has been advancing an innovative comprehensive plan that will be a model for other elementary schools in Tijuana. The underlying premise of the design is that new forms of learning demand a new relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. This means not just classrooms, but new building types for new programs: live-work spaces, a math lab, a teaching kitchen, an adult resource center – it seeks to make the school a center of community capacity-building. The House of Wise Words is meant to be a model for the way other impoverished elementary schools are planned and designed.
