SAN YSIDRO, CA – On Saturday October 12, 2024, The FRONT Arte & Cultura will open a new solo-exhibition of work by the binational arts collaborative Cog•nate Collective. The show How Can You Mend a Broken Heart? brings together a series of new works that explore border-crossing as a theme in dialogue with local communities from Tijuana (Baja California) and San Ysidro (California). The exhibition borrows its title from the popular 1971 song written and originally recorded by The Bee Gees (which has been extensively covered in both English and Spanish) to call attention to heartbreaking border and immigration enforcement policies along the U.S./Mexico border inflicting damage on innately interconnected communities and ecologies in our region. Varying in forms from neon sculptures and multimedia installations to collective performances inspired by ants, the projects in the exhibition bring attention to historical and ongoing strategies local communities have developed to facilitate movement and connection across borders – pointing to the vital need to propose and rehearse ways of mending what has been broken. As part of the exhibition, the artists have organized a binational series of workshops and a culminating public program that will invite community members to come together in pursuit of this aim.
