Join WDC for our Community Connections Series featuring San Diego-based Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba drum, song, and dance group, Bomba Liberté.
Rooted in resistance, Afro-Puerto Rican bomba is a powerful reminder of how music was and continues to be a tool for rebellion and community building. The name “Liberté,” French for “liberty,” nods to the influence of radical abolitionism from the French Antilles and the collective fight against racism and colonialism. “Bomba Liberté” signifies how bomba has been a powerful tool for liberation from historical and ongoing struggles, forging connections with Afro-Caribbean and diasporic communities. Practicing bomba in California serves as a daily reminder of this enduring legacy.
This event is presented in collaboration with Centro Cultural de La Raza, which is home to Bomba Liberte and many cultural, arts, and social justice community groups. Centro Cultural de la Raza, located in Balboa Park, is an arts and cultural community center whose mission is to create, promote, preserve, and educate about the forms and importance of Chicanx, Indigenous, and Latinx art and culture. The Centro encourages and facilitates artistic growth and cultural exchange in the San Diego/Tijuana region through classes and an interdisciplinary schedule of events including, but not limited to, exhibits, performances, installation art, readings, and film screenings. Our hours are 12-5pm Tuesday-Sunday.
